Overall Expectation

e1.  assess some of the costs and benefits associated with the production of electrical energy from renewable and non-renewable sources

e1. analyse how electrical efficiencies and savings can be achieved, through both the design of technological devices and practices in the home;

Option 1: Home Design

Background

You are building your own home on the edge of a small town. You have several acres of property

Task:  Design and build a model of your new home most energy efficient home possible taking the following into consideration.

Describe devices that can be used to conserve energy.

Describe how homes can be designed to be more energy efficient.

Describe how appliances and lighting can be more energy efficient.

Describe how alternative energy sources could be used to decrease the house's reliance on the electrical grid.

Discuss

What lifestyle choice people can develop that help conserve energy.  Explain why they lead to energy conservation.

How does energy conservation positively affects the environment

How will developing energy conservation affects the economy?  Can you afford it?

How do you feel about conserving energy? Is this reasonable and sustainable for Ontario Citizens?

Option 2: Individual Farm

Background

You own a 600 acres of farmland in Bluewater near Zurich.  You have several farms in the area surrounding your homestead.  You cash crop the land and have a small amount of bush. At your homestead you heat your house with an oil furnace and take your electricity off the grid.  You are considering investing in alternative energy for your home, solar microfit program  and participating in the corporate wind turbine developments in the area. You are also considering going off the grid completely and becoming self sustainable for all your electricity needs.

Task :  Develop a plan for use of alternative energy on your farm.

You should take the following into consideration.

Evaluate all the options of renewable resources as they relate to the individual land owner.

Describe how the electricity generation works.

Present clearly why you did or didn’t choose to incorporate certain sources.

Develop a plan and map to show what the developments will look like.  How and where are the installations going to be made on your farm?

Consider the impacts on local community, stakeholders and the environment in your plan.

Option 3 Provincial Government’s Plan for Sustainable Energy

Background Problem: The 40+ year old Pickering Nuclear Power Plant outside of Toronto provides  18 % of Ontario's electrical energy. The plant was scheduled to be decommissioned before Aug 31, 2018, 18% past its designed life but it's use has been extended despite concerns about it's maintenance..  You are part of acommittee for the provincial government designed with the task of making recommendations for how to replace the Pickering Nuclear Power Plant.

Task Develop a realistic and sustainable plan for the government to meet the electricity needs of the province.

You should take the following into consideration.

Evaluate all the options of renewable resources as they relate to the Province.

Describe how the electricity generation works that you choose.

Present clearly why you did or didn’t choose to incorporate certain sources.

Develop a plan and map to show what the developments will look like.  How and where are the installations going to be made?

Consider other strategies such as conservation and more efficient use of Electricity that the Government might encourage.

Consider the impacts on community members, stakeholders and the environment in your plan.

Option 4  Urban Community Design

Background:  As cities and towns are expanding there is a real interest in designing more sustainable and energy efficient housing developments.  An example of what is possible is illustrated by the West 5 development in London Ontario.  See the following website; https://west5.ca/community-story/sustainability

Task:  Develop a realistic and sustainable plan for urban development with focusses on alternative energies, energy efficient houses and minimizing human environmental impacts.

Evaluate all the options of renewable resources as they relate to the use in an urban community.

Describe how the electricity generation works.

Present clearly why you did or didn’t choose to incorporate certain sources.

Develop a plan and map to show what the developments will look like.  How and where are the installations going to be made in the development?

Consider the impacts on local community, stakeholders and the environment in your plan. Develop marking strategies to get people to buy houses in this community.
