1D Chemistry Exam Review

1.    Physical and chemical change

a) Explain how a physical change differs from a chemical change.
b) Name two physical changes and explain how you know they are physical changes.***
c)  Name two chemical changes and explain how you know they are chemical changes. ***
d)  Define the following terms; dissolving, burning

2.  Classification of matter

Explain the difference between the following.
    i) atoms & molecules                                         ii) elements & compounds
iii) solution vs mechanical mixture                  iv) homogeneous & heterogenous

3.  Periodic Table

A)  Where are the chemical families found on the periodic table?  Halogens, Noble Gases, Alkali metals, Alkali earth metals, metalloids, transition metals.

B)  Where are metals found on the Periodic table? Where are non-metals found on the Periodic table?

C)  Define periods and groups on the periodic table.

D)  What is the trend in valence as you go across the Periodic table? as you go down the periodic table?
E)  What is the trend in atomic size as you go across the PT and as you go down the PT.
F) Identify solids, liquids and gases on the periodic table.

4.  The atom

A)  Complete the following chart that describes the particles making up an atom.

Particle Symbol Mass Charge Location

B)  State the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in each of the following:
        27        31            40            14
        13Al        15P            19K             7 N
C)   Draw a Bohr-Rutherford diagram for each of the atoms in the question above.

5.  Molecules

A)  Distinguish between ionic and covalent/molecular compounds

B)  State the name of the elements and type of atoms (metal/nonmetals) that make up each of the following molecules
    a) NaCl         b)  MgO         c) HCl       d) CO2

C) Identify the compounds in B as ionic or molecular

D)  Draw a Lewis dot diagram for each of the compounds in B

6.  Identify the physical and chemical properties of substances.  Describe how the properties of elements determine their use and environmental/health impacts.  Eg.  What kind of characteristics should pesticides have if they are to be effective and not bioaccumulate?
