1D Biology Final Assessment Review

It is suggested that you go over all of the following in preparation for the exam.

1.  Define or describe and provide examples of the following ecology terms. 

abiotic and biotic components,  ecosystems, communities, population, terrestrial vs aquatic ecosystems. food chains, trophic levels,  food web, energy pyramids, biomass pyramid, pyramid on numbers, autotrophs, producers, herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, decomposer, prey, predator, scavenger, habitat, niche, predator prey relationships

2.  Describe Nutrient Cycles.

• Define and use terminology such as ; photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, Nitrogen fixation, Nitrification, Denitrification, Limiting nutrients, eutrophication
• Describe the carbon cycle.  Write the word equation for photosynthesis and respiration.   Explain what these equations describe about how these processes use or produce carbon dioxide
• Describe the nitrogen cycle.

• Analyze human inputs of nitrogen in ecosystems can lead to eutrophication?  Describe in detail how the addition of waste or fertilizer can lead to the formation of a dead lake.

3.  Analyze how human impacts such as the release of DDT and mercury into ecosystems affect organisms in the food chain.

• Describe the processes of biomagnification/bioaccumulation
• Describe the impacts of these chemicals 

4.  Analyze how humans have impacted ecosystems by the release of Invasive Species

• Define biodiversity, native/indigenous species, exotic species invasive species
• Describe the impacts of zebra muscles and other invasive species on the Great Lakes ecosystem

5.   Review how ecosystems were changed when wolves were removed and reintroduced to Yellowstone Nation Park
